Medieval Art: A Different Approach to Home D

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

The Medieval era is the period in European history from the fall of Rome to the Italian Renaissance; from 476AD to 1450AD. During this time Europe went through a series of considerable changes, gradually laying the groundwork for elements of the Renaissance and later periods. During this time Art flourished and came to embrace Christianity.

Medieval art emerged from a blend of Roman art and German art, thrown together during the upheavals of the Middle Ages. Its distinct, gothic look owes much to both its influences, and very quickly developed along distinct lines.

It is this distinct element to it that makes it so striking and, even now, is a serious consideration for anyone looking for something unusual and striking for their home d

Oh, You Are Just Spoiled Rotten!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

If you’ve ever called your own child spoiled rotten, you should be ashamed of yourself. Call someone else’s kid that, no problem, but not your own. Why? Because all we can see of someone else’s child is a result, and it may be disturbing. Whereas in your own case, the child is the ’spoilee’ and you are the ’spoiler’. OK, perhaps your spouse, but you both have some responsibility in it.

Your child is like a dry sponge, with thousands of little cavities waiting to be filled up. And around the child is a world bursting with candy, toys, activities, snacks, TV and computer games all eager to pounce. And who is in the middle? You, the gatekeeper. The key master. The valve.

Now, if you think about it, a sponge works so so when it is bone dry. It actually works a little better when slightly damp, but if the valve is broken, the sponge will fill to capacity quickly and become useless.

Granted, you can point a finger at your mate. He or she is the one who gives Bobby everything he wants. You’ve even argued about it from time to time, and the same thing is said every time. “Come on, it’s just until 11:00″, or “think of how happy it will make him”, or “I never got one of these when I was a kid”, or “OK, but just this once”. Sound familiar?

Almost everyone is guilty of this lack of will power to some degree. Unfortunately, if a parent lacks will power, the child will lack even more. This will develop to the point that the child will have no reason to deny him or herself anything. The notion was never passed down from the previous generation. Exercise a little restraint, can’t ya?

OK, why should anyone deprive themselves of anything? Seems like a reasonable question. Well, for starters, if, in the extreme case, you got everything you asked for, you would never get to the point of truly wanting for something. However, without wanting something you can’t have, at least right away, you don’t set goals. And without goals you don’t get anywhere. You are simply a full, soggy, sponge.

In addition, the spoiled rotten trait delivers a one-two punch. The spoiled individual may have little concept of the value of something. And worse still, the idea of having to save up for it and buy it on their own can seem ridiculous. Then there is the issue of generosity. How often is a spoiled individual truly generous? These and more negative characteristics can be attributed to someone who is spoiled rotten.

So my point is that as the guardian of all that is innocent and pure, being your child, you have the responsibility to think about such things and teach yourself how to control that which, if left unchecked, might put your child’s life out of balance. If discussions with your spouse are called for and may cause some short term distress, better that than passing a bad apple down to your children to make them spoiled rotten.

I heard a remarkable phrase recently that I’d like to relate here. It had to do with ecology, global warming etc. “We did not inherit the earth from our parents, we are borrowing it from our children”. And, in a way, I see this fitting in that we are the keepers of (their) childhood so that we can give it back healthy and strong.

A Kite Mobile Made From a Coat Hanger

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

This is an excellent way to let your child participate in the decoration of his or her room while at the same time having fun working on a creative crafts project!

All you will need for this project is probably already laying around your house. Find a wire coat hanger, some yarn, some colorful construction paper, glue, and decorating materials, such as paint, markers, crayons, stickers, glitter, etcetera.

Cut 6 diamond shapes out of the construction paper, it is fun to make them different colors, because each diamond represents a kite…and we want several different kites. You can make them different sizes as well to add variety, a good rule of thumb for the average size is five or six inches tall and three or four inches wide. Make them big enough to give your child room to create a masterpiece on each one!

Have your child spend time decorating each of the kites. To add variety, it is fun to have varying media used for the decoration, for example some might use crayons, a couple with paint, and one or two with glitter or stickers.

Once all the masterpieces are done, affix yarn to the bottom of each kite to represent its tail. Six inches or so will do, again it is fun to add some variety in lengths and colors. Stapling works just fine, although glue or tape will do as well.

Now, cut six bow shapes out of the construction paper to attach to the end of the tails. This can be made easier by cutting the shapes into a tuxedo bow-tie shape of two opposing triangles. Of course you can always spend the time to make them curvy and add as much detail as you want. Attach them to the end of the tails using staples, glue, or tape.

Now you can have your child attach the kites to the hanger. Again, varying lengths of yarn can be used for this purpose, however try to encourage your little one to space them along the hanger in a relatively even manner to ensure balance. This is not rocket science, it doesn’t have to be exact, just roughly balanced.

Now you are almost ready to hang the work of art. Have your child participate in the selection process of where to hang the mobile in his or her room. Once a suitable location has been agreed to (away from ceiling fans and the like), tie a piece of yarn to the hook of the hanger. This will allow the hanger to rotate freely and be a true mobile. Then, attach the top of the yarn to the ceiling, either by tying it to a hook, or using a stapler, thumb tack or push pin.

You now have a kite mobile! Add to the fun by spending time with your child making up stories about flying kites, or which make believe character each kite belongs to, or anything else that will stimulate the imagination. The possibilities are endless!

Martial Arts Book Review: Knife Fighting a Practical Course by Michael Janich

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it’s definitely worth owning. One such book is Michael D. Janich’s, “Knife Fighting a Practical Course.”

Michael’s book is one of those gems that are so hard to find in the vast sea of waste that seems to be so prevalent especially in the self-defense and martial arts literary field. His easy to understand and simplistic approach to this very important subject is in and of itself a thing of beauty to behold. Michael gets right to the point on every subject that he coves in this book, and every subject is a vital piece to learning how to use a knife in combat.

This book starts off with an introduction which covers the basic principles and concepts that you need to consider when dealing with knives in a combat situation. These concepts are numerous and include such things as; the moral implications of taking someone’s life, or having yours taken, the legal implications of the aforementioned actions whether someone dies or not, etc.

The next several chapters go over the basics on:

1. Proper Grip
2. Fighting Stance
3. Footwork and Mobility
4. Zones of Attack and Defense
5. Basic Cuts and Thrusts
6. Defensive Responses
7. Defensive Strategies and Counters
8. Targets
9. Example Techniques
10. Counter Defenses
11. Training Methods

Each one of the chapters in this book is well thought out and offers that which every person interested in the subject needs to have in order to start practicing with a knife, and that is good solid basic information covering all of the above listed subjects. This book does all that and more.

One point in this book that Michael stressed, that I found very memorable was a point from the chapter on example techniques. This point stressed that the examples being shown in that particular section were just that examples, and were not to be taken as gospel.

Now I am going to give you a spoiler here on what Michael considers the two most important things to remember in a knife fight. They are:

1. If at all possible, avoid a knife fight.
2. If you aren’t able to avoid a knife fight, turn around and run!

Very sound advice indeed. The book then concludes with a really terrific section on knife fighting and the real world. Sure to be an eye-opener for those readers who have watched a few too many movies and have very little or no practical experience on the subject. Now that you’ve taken the time to read this review, don’t wait any longer before buying and studying this book. You won’t be disappointed. I surely wasn’t. Choosing From The Various Styles Of End Tables

Monday, May 12th, 2008

There are many various styles of end tables available on the market and finding the end tables that fit your home is simply a matter of knowing what type of ambiance you want your room to possess. Luckily, the various styles of end tables available make it easy to find the end table that will provide you with the exact look you’re aiming for.

Each of the various styles of end tables offer their own touch to the rooms they reside in. Because of this, you want to make sure the end tables you buy will work well with the furniture you already have. For instance, if you have a very modern sofa with a new age look, you don’t want end tables featuring a Queen Anne design. Instead, you would want to shop from the contemporary end tables on the market. The other various styles of end tables probably wouldn’t suit your needs.

In order to shop from the various styles of end tables on the market, you need to know what styles are available. The most common end table styles include nesting, magazine, traditional, transitional, contemporary, arts & crafts, and mission styles. All of these various styles of end tables come in an array of materials, designs, sizes and price ranges.

Thanks to the wide selection offered by the various styles of end tables, it’s very easy to find exactly what your heart desires. Whether you want contemporary end tables made from metal or traditional end tables crafted from wood, you are sure to come across many end tables that offer exactly what you are looking for.

Another thing to consider when choosing from the various styles of end tables is that you should choose end tables that meet your personal needs. For instance, you may have decorated your family room in a traditional style, but if an arts & crafts end table would serve your needs better than a traditional end table and you can find one that looks good with your other furniture, you should probably choose the arts & craft style instead of the traditional.

While the wide variety of various styles of end tables can make shopping a bit more challenging, it does afford for a much larger selection of end tables for you to choose from.

Blog Hosts: A Short Tutorial

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Apart from the chat rooms, instant messengers and electronic mails created for communication and dialogue beyond turf are the emerging innovations that help man build opportunities for interaction. The need for a personalized and human face aspect of building online communities is slowly changing the technological landscape of the Internet.

Blogs / “weblogs” or blogging are the newest gift of Internet technology to people all over the world. These are updated posts, crop up entries or personalized life snippets, of mundane or bizarre in nature. For most, a “blog” is a personal, unedited, and authentic journal meant to be shared in an online community. Blog site is a place where bloggers can publish anything; his thoughts, feelings, photos, special events, experiences, comments on issues and so on. It is more of an online diary with videos, links, documents, newsletters and opinions on just about any topics you are interested.

Blogs are made to welcome the insights and opinions of all and therefore, should not be written to sound intimidating and too formal. This kind of blog is a sure way to put off the readers. In the basics of blogging, conversational tone would be more appropriate to reach the desired audience.

Blogging is all about individuals reaching out to other individuals. Having a blog has its own set of advantages:

* Freedom of Expression. If you want people to hear you out and give their own opinion, this is the best way to create a line of communication;

* Networking is at its best. Having a blog is a good platform for exchanging genuine ideas from consumers to you as marketer of a certain product. Sound opinion and point of view is better than just showing the price quote;

* Excellent advertising platform. Blogging is a new way to advertise products, a refreshing change from the traditional advertising outlets and it is cost-effective.

* Gauging public opinion on products and services. The key is nice and catchy titles with new ideas presented in your content. This is an assurance of quick and repeated responses from your readers. Blogs is an excellent spot for the exchange of ideas between the seller and the consumer. Good for measuring public opinion regarding services and products, even political and business matters alike.

* Useful tool for internal communication. This will help your company to build a knowledge-based community of employees. Also good for harnessing employee relations and identifying human resource issues in advance.

* Other benefits like search engine optimization (SEO) will help your blogs to be seen often by as many people as you wish. This is very good exposure for your products and services.

Many blog hosting services are available on the Internet. But the basic question is which one of the services will be the best to start off your business blog program? Business people are usually clueless to recent technological innovations which would help them maximize their marketing potentials. For these beginners, it is best to study first the services offered by blog hosts. An ineffective business blogging program may damage marketing opportunities instead of enriching them.

A company may decide to do the following depending on its capacity and needs: 1) Host their own blog service, 2) Pay someone else to host the service, or 3) Setup a “blog aggregator page” and ask the employees to select their blog hosting services individually. There are paid and free services available for individuals.

For business blogs, they are required to have the latest blogging features; if not, this will prevent them from maximizing their marketing, public relations and SEO potentials.

Keep in mind that blogs should have the following basic essentials:

COMMENTS. Welcoming comments provide opportunity for dialogue. In business blogs, they are a good customer feedback mechanism. This helps develop better customer relations based from loyalty and trust. Blogging is an innovative way to converse with your customers.

TRACKBACK. This helps in maximizing company and product exposure. Through this service, consumers can get back to you for more posts and updates without the difficulty of locating you. If your blog is popular in a specific online community chances are links going back to your blog site are everywhere online, other blog sites or even websites.

CATEGORIES AND TAGS. These both help in classifying blog searches for ease of navigation and on site search. Categories act as libraries because it classifies posts by subject matter such as business, distance learning, e-commerce, online auctions, etc. Tags, help in the classification, especially in the blog search engine Technorati. Possible customers and new clients locate blogs about certain topics of interest by just clicking the tags.

RSS FEED. Really Simple Syndication is the feed from your blog that is sent out over the internet, and collected through the various newsreaders and aggregators.

If your company is to establish a business blogging program, considerable options should be made available by the hosting companies shortlisted for the services. Free blog hosting services are popular but they are much appropriate for individual online journals. Paid blog hosting services offer unlimited packages best for your company’s needs. You may want to suggest checking out some blogs that use the host first, read and examine their layout and design. Another important thing to consider is a reliable technical support the host has.

After, choosing the blog host, a team should be ready to plan the design and structure of the blog: The team should:

* create a style that meets the needs of the audience;

* establish an open, credible tone;

* schedule weekly updating of blog - ideally, a few times a week;

* include weblinks of other website and blogs;

* blog post should be in the “first person;”

* focus on the business blog objective; and,
maintain an honest, engaging conversational quality.

Remember, whatever the look, style and content found on your blog is a reflection of you and your company.

Hybrid Cars Save Money

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Hybrid Cars Save Money If you have been sitting on the fence about deciding to purchase a Hybrid car, you no longer have any excuse to be squeamish. Consumer Reports just released a study this August that confirms that Hybrid cars will in fact save you money over the long run.

The combination of generous tax credits along with the fuel saving nature of these vehicles is what makes them a good long term value. The difference in up front cost between a hybrid and its traditional counterpart is often between $1200 and $7000. Thats a wide gap, and can be enough to leave you wondering if its worth it.

The good news is that if you act fast and purchase your new Hybrid car before the tax credits phase out in 2007, alot of that upfront additional cost will come back to you in the form of a tax credit. Meanwhile, you will enjoy long term savings on fuel costs.

Did you know that as of 2006, Hybrids account for only 1% of new car sales in the US? As gas prices rise, the ratio will likely change as people seek to cut costs out of rising fuel prices. Unfortunately, if you wait too long you will no longer be able to take advantage of the tax credits that are being phased out. If you are considering purchasing a Hybrid car, you are better to do it now.

The study, conducted by Consumer Reports assumes that you keep your Hybrid car for several years, long enough to notice the difference in cost of filling up. Of course, the more you drive to work, school, or on vacation, the faster and greater your savings will add up.

If you are researching Hybrid cars, be sure to check out http://www.hybridrevolution.org This site lists updated information on all makes and models of Hybrids available and soon to be available.

Amber Lowery is an author and webmaster. You can read more about Hybrid cars by visiting her site: http://www.netcarshopping.info/hybrid.html or by visiting: http://hybrid.autobuyerworld.info
